Methods of acoustic evaluation of opera houses

Abstract

A detailed review of studies on acoustic methods for opera houses evaluation is presented in this article. It contains the main objective acoustic parameters and also explains the limits of the parameters’ change. The article describes methods for evaluating subjective parameters applied to classical opera houses. Some objectively measured indoor sound field parameters are compared with subjective acoustic qualities. The author considers the above parameters in such examples as: Teatro alla Scala in Milan, The Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, Covent Garden in London, National Theatre in Prague, Vienna Opera House and Metropolitan Opera in New York.
