Semantics of electric guitar’s timbre in postspectral music: Fausto Romitelli’s Trash TV Trance

Abstract

The electric guitar occupies a special place in the contemporary art, serving as a key instrument in popular music culture, particularly in rock music and its offshoots. The electric guitar’s timbre possesses unique characteristics that allow musicians to create diverse sonic images and convey a vast range of emotions and moods. This article examines the semantics of the electric guitar’s timbre in the postspectral music, highlighting the specifics of its use and influence on listeners’ perception of musical material using Fausto Romitelli’s Trash TV Trance as an example. It also explores the relationship between the electric guitar’s timbre and musical context, extra-musical associations, images of the electric guitar in the popular consciousness, and the composition’s content.
